Rosewood Calcite from Daye, Hubei, China
A striking collector's specimen of Rosewood Calcite from the renowned Daye mining district of Hubei Province, China. The specimen is covered with a dense formation of beautifully defined Calcite crystals displaying rich smoky rose-brown and reddish-brown tones, together with an impressive glass-like lustre.
Daye is a historic copper and iron mining region that has become particularly celebrated amongst mineral collectors for the remarkable variety and quality of Calcite specimens discovered there. The area's complex mineralisation has produced Calcite in an extraordinary range of colours and crystal habits, making Daye material highly distinctive.
The name Rosewood Calcite refers to the warm brown and rose colouring reminiscent of rosewood timber. Viewed under good lighting, the translucent crystals reveal subtle variations of smoky grey, champagne and reddish-brown, while the numerous reflective crystal faces give the specimen exceptional sparkle and depth.
A beautiful example from an important Chinese mineral locality and an excellent piece for collectors who appreciate unusual Calcite crystal formations.
